She returns
I’ve been absent for a few weeks; sorry about that. It’s been rough going for everyone, I think, and it’s been hard to scrape myself off the floor for a while. But onward we go. I hope you are doing well, especially if you’re in Texas right now.
Some things I read that are worth reading:
This is quite a nice article about how things could be getting better soon, if we just hang on. Quite a lift!
Scorsese on Fellini. I mean.
Also, Alex Ross on Tarkovsky.
Some movies I wrote about that you might like: Nomadland, Minari, Judas and the Black Messiah, and Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Each great, in wildly different fashion from one another.
I had my students read the late, great Jonathan Gold’s essay “The Year I Ate Pico Boulevard” a couple of weeks ago and was reminded of what a stellar piece of writing it is. Short, limpid, and just perfect.
On February 14, along with some friends, we did the “immersive theatrical thriller” called Plymouth Point, put on (entirely via Zoom) by some alums of the group that makes things like Sleep No More. The group was four journalists and two other smartypants, which means we successfully completed it in the timeframe (it’s a little like an escape room), and we had a lot of fun doing it.
Hang in there, friends. Help is finally on the way.
